FL City Fines Woman Over $100k For Parking ‘Incorrectly’ In Her Driveway
29/06/2023

A woman in Lantana, Florida, was fined over $100,000 for parking incorrectly on her own property. Sandy Martinez and her family had limited parking space, so she partially parked her car on the grass. However, the city cited her for violating a town ordinance that required off-street parking spaces to be hard surfaced. Despite her attempts to resolve the issue with the city, fines accumulated to a total of $165,000, including additional fines for cosmetic violations. Sandy filed a lawsuit, arguing that the fines violated the Excessive Fines Clause of the Florida Constitution. The lawsuit seeks a declaratory judgment that the fines imposed are unconstitutional.
