An 82-year-old Vietnam veteran, Herbert Parrish, successfully defended himself, his wife, and his property from an armed intruder who broke into their home in South Carolina. The intruder, Harold Runnels, had slashed Lois' forehead with a knife before the elderly man grabbed a shotgun and repeatedly struck him until he fell unconscious. When authorities arrived, Runnels was unresponsive and later died from his injuries. While some neighbors were shocked by the incident, others were proud that the Parrishes were able to fend off the suspect. Aiken County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Eric Abdullah stated that people have the right to defend themselves if their lives are in danger.
