Greetings from the Pacific Northwest! I’m Missilla, and today I’m excited to share how you can transform your kitchen scraps into a bountiful supply of leafy greens and seeds. This is a fantastic and engaging activity you can do with your kids, all while giving back to the environment.
Getting Started with Regrowing Scraps
I began regrowing my vegetable scraps about four weeks ago. For this project, I started the scraps indoors in water before transplanting them into containers outdoors. Some scraps were planted directly into outdoor containers. Here’s a step-by-step guide based on my four-week progress.
Indoor to Outdoor Transition
1. Starting Indoors: Begin by submerging your scraps in water. This helps them develop roots before you move them to soil.
For instance, pineapple tops and potato pieces are ideal candidates for this method. A pineapple top, after rooting, can be transferred to a pot with cactus potting mix.
