Understanding Ginger: Rhizome vs. Root
Ginger, widely recognized for its culinary and medicinal uses, is a fascinating plant to grow. Although we commonly refer to it as ginger root, it’s technically a rhizome—a modified underground stem. This rhizome is the part of the plant that we harvest, not the root itself.
When cultivating ginger, we’re planting this rhizome to grow new plants.
Choosing and Planting Ginger Rhizomes
When selecting ginger rhizomes, look for those with visible “eyes,” the small nodules from which new shoots will emerge.
